Yejin Gil

Piano Masterclass

Yejin Gil is an outstanding, multi-award-winning pianist. She combines technical brilliance with musical sophistication and the uncompromising pursuit of artistic authenticity. Her work focusses on the classical-romantic repertoire as well as the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Her brilliant CD debut with works by Chin, Ligeti, Boulez and Messiaen immediately won the “Coup de Coeur” of the Académie Charles Cros in 2014, one of the most important critics’ prizes in France, and also caused a sensation in England: “Gil has the fingers to articulate the densest, fast-moving passages in such music with dazzling precision, but everything she does is also perceptive and utterly musical, none of the wit in either set eluding her.” (The Guardian)

In recent years she has worked with composers such as Unsuk Chin, Pierre Boulez, Lasse Thoresen, Philippe Hurel, Heiner Goebbels, Helmut Oehring, Martin Matalon, Oscar Strasnoy, with conductors such as Kent Nagano, Hans Rotman, Steven Sloane, Alexander Merzyn and with orchestras/ensembles such as the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg, BochumerSymphoniker, MDR Sinfonieorchester, the Philharmonisches Orchester des Staatstheaters Cottbus, Berliner Symphoniker, Staatskapelle Halle, Anhaltische Philharmonie Dessau, 1B1 Ensemble, Seoul Chamber Ensemble, Percussions de Strasbourg, Ensemble Court-Circuit, Zafraan Ensemble. In addition to her activities as a soloist, she regularly performs chamber music projects with musicians such as Jörg Widmann, Matthias Schorn, Nora Chastain, Mark Gothoni, Stephan Picard, Eszter Haffner, Jan Bjøranger, Lars Anders Tomter, Paul Cortese, Adrian Brendel, Xenia Jankovic, Øyvind Gimse, David Adorján and Torleif Thedéen.

Yejin Gil has performed internationally at events such as the Ruhr Piano Festival, Kasseler Musiktage, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, IFCP Festival New York, Frontiers Plus Birmingham, Young Euro Classic Berlin, International Piano Festival La Roque d’Anthéron, Lviv MozArt Festival, Acanthes Festival Metz, Tongyeong International Music Festival, ImpulsFestival, The Reflective Musician Oslo, Stavanger Chamber Music Festival, Encuentros Buenos Aires, Festival de Sully et du Loiret, Chorin Music Summer and has performed in concert series and halls such as the Grand Théâtre de Genève, Essen Philharmonie, Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord, Salle Cortot Paris, Weimarhalle, Konzerthaus Berlin and Seoul Arts Centre.

Yejin Gil began her piano training at the age of five.
